JUNE 2019

On the shores of Bear Pond
fluffy chicks waddle
following their parents
into the cool green
cattle are long gone now
pond lies peacefully
nurturing and nourishing life

One fledgling
teetering on the edge
soon taking flight

Glistening droplets
tremble on orange satin
brief morning shower

Turning his head
raven's eye sees all
even the past
is no mystery to his kind
yet for now he's in the moment
harsh cronk fills the air
announcing his satiny presence

***

 Pale amber face
framed in sacred oak
strawberry moon

Golden pool
spills across the sky
full moon rising

Full Moon
why the sudden urge
to throw back my head
under her silver light they run
loping with the pack in a black and white dream

Beloved Tess 2005-2019

Today she took her last morning ride
though no grinning face with tongue lolling
could be seen in the side mirrors
her riding partner stood by the gate
sad eyed begging to ride along
as was their habit each and every day
not understanding that her beloved friend
was laid out in state across the backseat
in her somewhat doggy scented chariot
yesterday's drool marks yet to be removed
liberally streaking the country road dust
both of us in the front seat sleep deprived
teary eyed in utter disbelief at this
sudden dreadful early morning departure
absentmindedly stroking her now cool
lifeless flank her eyes wide open as if
looking into the next dimension
handing her into caring hands who covered
her gently after lifting her from her deathbed
next week we'll pick up her ashes ...it still seems surreal

Outside the kitchen window
red knight holds silent vigil
russet armor shining

Staid Privet suddenly
explodes in creamy splendour
bees hum golden trousered

In dappled shade
calla lily blushes delicately
memories of Felix
rise along with her blossoms
he was just a stray
we could not save in time
long gone but never forgotten

Celestial mystery
high in the azure sky
mysterious egg shapeshifts

We brought her home again today
her slender, furry body
now held in the palm of my hand
final chapter of her life
precious memories held close
we smile teary eyed as we carry
her to the truck one last time
rest well, dear brown eyed girl
until we meet once more
on the far side of rainbow bridge
