silver bellies flash as they twirl and play

casting tiny shadows in the creek bed

joyful leaps draw concentric circles

quivering and rippling~refracting light

We walk~the rising sun at our backs~shadows well ahead

We pause and so do they~breathing in the cool morning air~savoring the feel

Then start again, hurrying homeward to beat

the heat already licking at our heels
